Every year I see people upset about the commercialization of Valentine’s Day. I get it, there can be a lot of pressure that comes with this day. Although this year I have had a new found perspective of being a mom and Valentine’s Day. I want to teach my daughter about love her entire life. More importantly I want to teach her agape love,Agape (Ancient Greek ἀγάπη, agápē) is “love: the highest form of love, charity; the love of God for man and of man for God. Not to be confused with philia – brotherly love –agape embraces a universal, unconditional love that transcends, that serves regardless of circumstances. As Christians we should live daily to love, love God, love his church, and love people. Unconditionally. Let’s be honest this is much easier as a t shirt slogan than it is in form of actions. I love the end of the definition, serves regardless of circumstance. How many times do we put serving under conditions? I will serve my husband when he…..I will do special things for the kids when they….even as far as I will serve the church when…..These conditions are only holding us back from truly experiencing agape love! I am so excited this year to have a conversation with Daisy about love and Valentines as we make fun Valentines for her friends. I am excited for a teaching opportunity to explain to her how we can serve our friends, our siblings, and even our mom and dad even when we don’t want to or there is nothing in it for us. We can take this time and teach our kids how to be kind to people regardless of circumstance. A few day’s ago we spoke to someone in public that looked very different on the outside than we do. Shepherd was a little frightened by this person and Daisy reached over and told him, “you don’t have to be scared of him, he is just like us but looks different.” Unconditional love. Its so important to remember in every season and every “time of year” that everyone has circumstances and whether they were based on choices they made or circumstances out of their control our call is still the same..
John 15:13-15The Message (MSG)
11-15 “I’ve told you these things for a purpose: that my joy might be your joy, and your joy wholly mature. This is my command: Love one another the way I loved you. This is the very best way to love. Put your life on the line for your friends. You are my friends when you do the things I command you. I’m no longer calling you servants because servants don’t understand what their master is thinking and planning. No, I’ve named you friends because I’ve let you in on everything I’ve heard from the Father. “
